Australia will double the number of educational scholarships it offers in the Asia-Pacific region. The new program, to be called Australian Scholarships, will provide nearly $1.4 billion in funding over five years for more than 19,000 scholarships. The initiative brings together Australian Development Scholarships (ADS), managed by Australia's international aid agency, AusAID, and Endeavour scholarships, administered by the Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST). A new component, the Australian Leadership Awards (ALA) will target future leaders in the region for advanced study. 27 April 2006

The second round of the Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) information sessions will be held around the country in April and May. This is an opportunity for the international education industry to learn about, and provide feedback on, the proposed changes to the revised National Code for Registration Authorities and Providers of Education and Training to Overseas Students (the National Code). Information session dates are available from the Australian Education International website.

In order to address the growing information and technological needs of the Asia and Pacific region, the International Open Source Network (IOSN) has established three new Centres of Excellence ? IOSN ASEAN+3, IOSN PIC (Pacific Island Countries), and IOSN South Asia. Together, these Centres will continue the research and development, networking, institutional strengthening, and training undertaken by IOSN over the last three years to advance the adoption of free/open source software, open standards, and open content across the region. The February 2006 International Student enrolment data, released by Australian Education International, show an increase of 8.0 per cent from the same period last year. Asia remains Australia's main source of international students, accounting for 79.6 per cent of Australia's overseas student market with continuing growth occurring from China, India and South Korea. 11 April 2006
