Students from sub-Saharan Africans seeking higher education are the most mobile in the world, with one out of 16 studying abroad, according to a new study carried out by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). By contrast, only one out of every 250 North American students goes overseas for higher studies, which the UNESCO Institute for Statistics considers as the 'least mobile group.' Published in the Institute?s Global Education Digest 2006, the report presents the latest education statistics from primary to tertiary levels in more than 200 countries. UN News, 31 May 2006

The Minister for Education, Science and Training, the Hon Julie Bishop MP, and the Dutch Minister for Education, Culture and Science, the Hon Maria van der Hoeven MP, today announced a new pilot student exchange programme between Australia and the Netherlands. 'The Endeavour Duyfken Student Exchange Programme will provide opportunities for 20 Australian students and 20 Dutch students to travel overseas for one semester of their undergraduate degrees,' Minister Bishop said. The Endeavour Duyfken Student Exchange Programme, will provide opportunities for 20 Australian students and 20 Dutch students to travel overseas for one semester of their undergraduate degrees under new institution-to-institution student exchange arrangements in the 2007-08 Northern academic year. This will provide students with cultural, language and professional experiences that will lead to increased collaboration between higher education institutions in Australia and the Netherlands. 12 May 2006

The Australian Government will increase funding for scientists undertaking collaborative research projects with China, in recognition of the growing significance of the bilateral relationship between the two countries. The Australia-China Special Fund for Scientific and Technological Cooperation, established by an MOU in 2000, aims to strengthen bilateral science and technology collaboration between the two countries. Australia and China provide funding, with each country contributing to the costs of its own nationals. 26 April 2006

The Industry Consultation Draft of the revised National Code of Practice for Registration Authorities and Providers of Education and Training to Overseas Students is now available for comment. To date, the revision process has involved consultation with Australian Government agencies, state and territory governments and international education peak bodies and other industry associations. The Department of Education, Science and Training is now seeking broader industry feedback. 3 May 2006

The year-to-date (YTD) March 2006 International Student data, collated by Australian Education International, have recorded a total of 264,002 enrolments by full-fee international students in Australia. This represents an 8.2% increase on the same period last year. The results show that steady growth in most sectors of the Australian international education market is continuing. 4 May 2006

Recent negotiations for an Australia - Malaysia Free Trade Agreement have included discussions on issues identified by both Australian education providers and Malaysian delegates. The Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) are working in partnership on the education services aspects of the negotiations. They encourage information from providers of educational services to Malaysia, including potential providers, whether these services are supplied to Malaysian nationals here in Australia or within Malaysia itself. Individuals, institutions or representative bodies that have already made submissions, may still provide further information, including concrete examples, on problems encountered in providing educational services to Malaysia. 10 May 2006
